Edge AI Versus Edge Computing

Rather than traveling someplace in the network, the Edge suggests local (or near-local) service. It would be a standalone physical computer, such as a self-contained refrigerator or server, placed close to the source.

The Edge can be used when minimal latency is necessary or when the network is not always available. This may be coupled with the necessity to make real-time decisions in other systems.

Most cloud apps get data locally, send it to the cloud, process it, and then return it. Because the cloud does not need to be sent to the Edge, it is better and less disruptive. Edge AI algorithms can still be installed in the cloud but operated at the Edge.
